In the Democratic primary, state Sen. Sean Ryan defeated Christopher Scanlon, who has served as Buffalo’s acting mayor since the elected mayor, Byron Brown, resigned in October 2024. The race uses ranked-choice voting, and while Frey didn’t win a majority of first choice votes, he won after the ranked-choice votes were tabulated.
