Flotilla activists describe brutal treatment in Israel

Activists onboard the Global Sumud Flotilla have described being denied food, clean water and access to legal advice while being detained in Israel. Those released also said they were forced to watch images of the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel, and some allege that beatings and violence were common. Israel’s Foreign Ministry has called the claims ‘brazen lies’ and maintains that it upheld all legal rights of the detainees.

Displaced Palestinians, children and adults, wait for a food portion at a shelter where families have been living, in Nuseirat, in the central of Gaza Strip on November 23, 2025. The UN humanitarian agency OCHA said on November 22, 2025, the ceasefire scale-up of aid deliveries into Gaza "is still being held back by restrictions affecting visas and import approvals, too few crossing points operating" and other impediments. The war on Gaza was sparked by Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, which resulted in the deaths of 1,221 people. Israel's retaliatory assault on Gaza has killed at least 69,733 people, according to figures from the health ministry that the UN considers reliable. (Photo by EYAD BABA / AFP via Getty Images)
