It has now been a week since a devastating pair of earthquakes struck Venezuela’s northern coast, and rescue operations are still taking place.

Venezuelan authorities said Wednesday that at least 2,295 people were killed in the earthquakes. But the death toll is believed to be much larger. There are still many people unseen beneath the rubble, and it may take some time for a full picture of the casualties to emerge.

In the hard-hit city of La Guaira, CNN has seen people using pickaxes, shovels and their bare hands to break apart collapsed high-rise apartment buildings as fuel and resources are in short supply.

“La Guaira is indescribable,” one forensic pathologist told CNN. “There are so many cases, so many families. (The earthquakes) hit the lower-income families the hardest – they are the most affected.”

Here are some of the stories that made headlines over the past week, as well as some photos that caught our eye.
