The annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner was thrown into chaos on Saturday night when gunshots were heard outside the ballroom where President Donald Trump, first lady Melania Trump and many administration officials were attending the event.

The gunman never made it to the ballroom at the Washington Hilton; he was subdued by law enforcement after sprinting through a security checkpoint. But the room was quickly cleared and Trump did not return to the dinner.

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer was outside the ballroom when he saw the gunman opening fire just a few feet away. Blitzer was among the dozens of attendees who took cover as law enforcement swarmed.

“The gunshots were so loud, so frightening, that it scared all of us,” Blitzer said. “We had no idea what was going on.”

The suspect, Cole Tomas Allen, was charged Monday with attempting to assassinate the president. Allen, a 31-year-old from California, has not yet entered a plea in the case.

Here are some of the stories that made headlines over the past week, as well as some photos that caught our eye.
