Iran’s new supreme leader has purportedly delivered his first written message, demanding that the United States and Israel pay “compensation” for their attacks on Iran.

Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, also warned Thursday that the key Strait of Hormuz shipping route will remain closed to apply pressure.

The International Energy Agency has warned that the war is causing the “largest supply disruption in the history of the global oil market.” To help absorb the shock, a global body of countries has agreed to release emergency oil reserves.

Khamenei was elevated to the position after his father was killed in US-Israeli airstrikes. His appointment appeared to be a deliberate act of defiance – a signal that Iran’s leadership has no intention of folding to American pressure.

Here are some of the stories that made headlines over the past week, as well as some photos that caught our eye.
