Zohran Mamdani made history Tuesday when he was elected mayor of New York City.
Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist who has focused on working-class issues, is the city’s first Muslim mayor and the first South Asian to hold the office.
“For as long as we can remember, the working people of New York have been told by the wealthy and the well connected that power does not belong in their hands, fingers bruised from lifting boxes on the warehouse floor,” Mamdani told supporters at his election-night event in Brooklyn. “Palms calloused from delivery by candle bars. Knuckles scarred with kitchen burns. These are not hands that have been allowed to hold power. And yet, over the last 12 months, you have dared to reach for something greater. Tonight, against all odds, we have grasped it.”
Mamdani’s win marks a victory for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party at a time when national Democrats are divided over how to counter President Donald Trump. Mamdani defeated former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
