Five people were killed when a Japan Airlines plane carrying hundreds of passengers collided with an earthquake relief aircraft at Tokyo's Haneda airport on Tuesday.
The collision happened on the runway as the passenger plane was landing. Its crew had just minutes to safely evacuate all 379 people on board before flames consumed the entire plane.
The five people who were killed were crew members on the second aircraft, which was operated by the Japan Coast Guard to help with earthquake relief efforts in Niigata prefecture. Public broadcaster NHK said the plane's captain was in a critical condition.
Japan Airlines is taking part in the investigation to determine who is responsible for the deadly crash, its senior vice president of corporate safety and security Tadayuki Tsutsumi told reporters. In a later statement, the airline said its crew had been cleared to land by air traffic control before the collision.
