Lane cake, Alabama. Credited to Emma Rylander Lane of Clayton, Alabama, the official state dessert has a buttery, bourbon- or brandy-spiked filling with raisins and sometimes pecans and coconut.

Marionberry pie, Oregon. A special blackberry hailing from Oregon makes its way into pies for a short time mid-summer. This beauty is from Lauretta Jean's Pie Bakery in Portland.

Key lime pie, Florida. Small, tart, yellowish key limes were once grown commercially in the Florida Keys, and the pie is Key West's signature dish.

Shave ice, Hawaii. Shave ice arrived in Hawaii from Japan. Soft flakes of ice shaved from a solid block soak up the sweet syrups of your choice.

A certain chocolate-walnut pie, Kentucky. A Louisville business has the registered trademark on "Derby-Pie®," but home cooks have been known to have a go at the delicious combination.

Moravian sugar cake, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. With roots in the Moravian communities in these states, this buttery cake has been baked at Dewey's in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, since 1930.

Buckeyes, Ohio. Peanut butter and chocolate with no baking necessary. This candy hails from the Buckeye State, a nickname that originates from a tree with nuts that resemble the eye of a deer.

Boston cream pie, Massachusetts. "A pie in cake's clothing." That's how Yankee Magazine described the Boston cream pie, the state dessert of Massachusetts.

Bananas Foster, Louisiana. Created at Brennan's in New Orleans, this flambéed banana dish with vanilla ice cream can be prepared at home.

Smith Island Cake, Maryland. While the recipe seems to date back generations, this many-layered cake's profile got a big boost when it was named Maryland's state dessert in 2008.

Coconut cake, Southern states. The lovely coconut-covered layer cake is present at many an occasion in the South.

Biscochitos, New Mexico. Brought to New Mexico by early Spanish colonists, this anise-flavored cookie topped with cinnamon sugar has been the official state cookie since 1989.

Texas sheet cake. Often baked in a large pan, this thin chocolate cake might be associated with Texas for its sheer expanse.
