Bargain homes: The town of Troina in Sicily is joining the likes of Mussomeli and Zungoli by putting dozens of abandoned homes on the market for one euro.

Revitalization scheme: Local authorities are keen to attract new residents to the town's dwindling ancient district.

Rescue plan: "I want to save our old district from the grave and recover its lost grandeur, when it was the Norman capital of Sicily," Mayor Sebastiano Fabio Venezia tells CNN Travel.

Availability: There are roughly 30 one euro abodes immediately available, while another 100 homes are likely to go on the market soon.

Sale conditions: Buyers must pay a deposit guarantee of 5,000 euros, which will be returned to them once the renovation work is complete.

Renovation project: While the final restyle plan can be submitted a year after purchase, work must begin two years after the buyer acquires the property.

Dwindling district: The ancient district is around 500 meters or so from the newer, more populated areas of Troina.

Close vicinity: The districts are connected by narrow cobbled alleys and arched ornate passageways.

Scenic town: Troina is a member of the elite club of I Borghi Più Belli d'Italia, also known as Italy's most beautiful small villages and towns.

Neglected: The historical center has been struggling over the past few decades.

Moving on: Over the years, locals have packed up and moved to more modern houses around Troina, or left the town completely.

Stunning views: Set at 1,100 meters altitude, Troina is known as the "Balcony of Sicily" for its spectacular panorama.

Cash incentives: Town officials are prepared to reward those willing to become a permanent resident with 8,000 euros toward buying a home in the town that doesn't require upgrading.

Beautiful landmarks: The town is also home to Church of Maria Santissima Assunta, the first cathedral founded by the Normans in Sicily.
