
Thamkrabok: A Buddhist monastery located 140 kilometers (86 miles) north of Bangkok, Thamkrabok specializes in treating drug addiction. It resembles a small village, with golden-roofed temples and small cottages for the monks and nuns.

'The Sacca': New arrivals at Thamkrabok have to take a special oath called a Sacca, promising to never touch drugs again.

Daily chores: Every morning, the patients are given different chores, such as making bricks.

Steam bath: Just before lunch, they take a steam bath to get rid of the toxins in their body.

The purging ceremony: The purging ceremony takes place every day. The emetic potion is a thick brown liquid made up of 108 herbs sourced locally.

Purging liquid: The temple herbalist gives the patients a shot glass of the purging liquid, which one of his assistants pours down their throats.

Vomiting: Soon after drinking the emetic potion, the patients start to vomit profusely. "The vomiting helps expel toxins in the body," explains Suparo. "We have found this helps a lot with the withdrawal symptoms."

The Hej: After the purging ceremony, the patients relax in the Hej, a walled compound within Thamkrabok.

Thamkrabok: Founded in the late 1950s by local nun Luang Poh Yaai and her two nephews, the monastery soon turned to treating addictions.

The Cabin in Chiang Mai: The Cabin is split into five villages, catering to women, young men, older men, LGBT+ members and Muslims. Peter Maplethorpe is one of the four founding partners of The Cabin in Chiang Mai.

Head therapist for men: Mike Miller, one of the head therapists at The Cabin, is in charge of the program for men.

Daily therapy sessions: At the cabin, guests have daily therapy sessions, using cognitive behavioral therapy.

Head therapist for women: Paula Shields, one of The Cabin's head therapists, is in charge of the program for women.

Bouqitue rehab center: Lanna, which describes itself as a boutique rehab center, is nestled among paddy fields south of Chiang Mai.

Sober after 20 years: After undergoing rehab in Thailand Christopher Castellaw, a 37-year old Colorado native, managed to get sober after 20 years of heavy drinking.
