Flask —
If you're thirsty in Shanghai, this vintage Coca-Cola vending machine offers some unexpected refreshment. It's the secret entrance to Flask, a hidden cocktail bar in the former French Concession.

Flask's signature drink —
Taiwan Plum Soup features Zacapa rum, an infusion of longan juice, sherry and creme de cassis, Prucia plum liqueur, sweet osmanthus wine, dried chrysanthemum flowers and a dusting of salty plum sugar on the rim of an earthenware cup.

Speak Low —
Speak Low is the brainchild of Shingo Gokan, founder of New York's Angel's Share bar. The speakeasy is hidden behind a bookcase in a shop specializing in bartending equipment.

Award-winning drink —
Speak Low's eponymous signature cocktail is a blend of green macha tea, Bacardi Superior and Bacardi 8 rums and Pedro Ximenez sherry. It's served with dark chocolate to match its bitter but intricate flavors.

Head bartender —
The bar is helmed by Gokan's protege, Atsushi Suzuki.

Spirited Away —
Suzuki's personal signature is Spirited Away cocktail -- a gin-based creation flavored with vermouth, yuzu marmalade and a spoonful of grated wasabi.

The Library Distillery —
The entrance to The Library Distillery is hidden behind a mirror at Light and Salt restaurant in the historic Bund waterfront district.

El Ocho —
El Ocho cocktail bar shares the entrance with a flower shop -- handy if you've forgotten to buy a bouquet for your date.

Five-piece band —
Hiker Yao, (left) bartender at El Ocho, prepares a Corpse of Old Tom, one of the venue's signature cocktails.

Corpse of Old Tom —
Corpse of Old Tom, a variation on a Corpse Reviver, contains Ransom Old Tom gin, fresh lime, dry curacao and absinthe.

The Tailor Bar —
The street level entrance to Tailor cocktail bar is a nondescript elevator next to a Chinese medicine store.
