In for the long haul: Some travel operators are encouraging people to use up all their vacation in one go when flying to a long-haul destination like the Seychelles, to embrace slow travel and make their journey count for more.

North Island: Travel operator Natucate sets up sabbatical breaks for people on the Seychelles' North Island. During stays ranging from weeks to months -- and even years -- travelers help out with conservation projects.

Helping out: During their stays on North Island, travelers can help out with conservation projects and gain a greater understanding of the region's biodiversity.

Beach patrols: "We send people there for longer periods of eight or more weeks to assist the research team and scientists on the island," says Daniel Kaul, CEO of Natucate. "And we do monitoring of green turtles, Hawksbill turtles, which include daily beach patrols. Sometimes we need to move nests a bit more towards the island so that they don't get affected by the water."

Turtle recall: Kaul says the work clients do in the Seychelles often has a lasting impact and many continue to support projects when their time on North Island is over. "But we also see people engage with NGOs back home and think about wildlife or nature conservation and what you can do in your neighborhood."

Slow travel: "We see that people want to stay longer and have a more conscious impact on conservation and to understand the conservation work we are doing better," Kaul adds. "They prefer this to coming for seven days and hurrying."
