New beginnings: Sarajevo's historic Holiday Inn hotel reopened in 2016 with a new name: Hotel Holiday.

Iconic building: Designed by Bosnian architectIvan Štraus for the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics, the hotel was originally created to be an "indoor city" for its guests.

Current incarnation: "We wanted to keep the previous look of the hotel because it is symbolic and well-known." says Fatima Alefendić, Hotel Holiday's sales and marketing executive manager.

Shiny facilities: Hotel Holiday has a spa center with saunas, a pool, massage rooms and a fitness center.

New clientele: 22 years after the end of the conflict, Sarajevo is now growing in popularity as a weekend break destination.

Turbulent history: Sarajevo's Holiday Inn became internationally famous as a base for foreign correspondents during the 1990s Balkans conflict.

Dangerous location: Sarajevo was under siege from 1992 to 1996. The hotel is situated on Zmaja od Bosne Street, one of the most hazardous positions in the city at that time.

Sniper Alley: Sniper Alley, pictured in 1993, was the name given to Zmaja od Bosne Street and Meša Selimović Boulevard. The road was lined with snipers' posts and some of the staff at the hotel dodged snipers' bullets in order to go to work.
