Permanently grounded —
An airport that never really got off the ground, Ciudad Real is 150 miles from Spain's capital, Madrid, and closed after only three years of operations in 2012.

Running late —
Still waiting for take-off: A half-marathon took place at Berlin Brandenberg Willy Brandt Airport in April 2013. The airport was originally planned to open in 2010.

Money pit —
Ciuded Real Airport cost $1.3B to build. More recently it has been used in director Pedro Aldomodvar's film "I'm So Excited!" and as a test track for sports cars.

Permanently bypassed —

Hong Kong's urban airport —
An iconic shot of Kai Tak International Airport, Hong Kong --a departing Cathay Pacific's flight captured in between the walk-up buildings in Kowloon City. The airport was replaced by Chek Lap Kok airport in 1998.

Terminal decline —
Sitting in the city and in the sea, Kai Tak International Airport was one of the most dangerous (read exciting) airports in the world to land at. The site was largely unused after it closed until 2009 when construction started to transform the runway into a cruise ship terminal.

Saved by the sea —
Hong Kong's Kai Tak Cruise Terminal received its first group of cruise ship passengers in June 2013.

A green transformation —
Malmö, Sweden's Bulltofta Airport closed down in the 1970s. The city decided that rather than sell it off, it would redevelop it as a park and entertainment complex.

Homes instead of planes —
The defunct Robert Mueller Municipal Airport in Austin, Texas, is in the process of being redeveloped as a housing community. Though most of the old hub was demolished, some details, including a World War II-era hanger, remain.

A new purpose for ghost airports —
Forest City Enterprises is in the process of converting the old Denver hub, Stapleton International Airport, into mixed-use housing. The old control tower still dominates the city skyline.
