City House chef and Nashville native Tandy Wilson, right, won a James Beard Award in 2016 for best chef in the Southeast. CNN asked him for some Nashville travel ideas.

Seeing a show at the Ryman Auditorium is the cornerstone of a great trip to Nashville, Wilson says. Here, singer-songwriter Margo Price plays at the "Mother Church of Country Music."

Right around the corner from the Ryman, Robert's Western World is one of the city's most beloved honky-tonks for traditional country music. Bands play every day from about 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.

Bastion is a 24-seat restaurant-within-a-bar from chef Josh Habiger, center. The menu features two-word descriptions that belie the complexity of each carefully constructed dish.

Whole hog sandwiches topped with slaw really hit the spot at Martin's Bar-B-Que, one of Wilson's favorite places for a casual meal.

At Arnold's Country Kitchen, a blackboard features the day's choices. One meat with three sides is the formula for Nashville's traditional "meat-and-three" meal.

"Memphis is a barbecue city, right? We're a meat-and-three city," Wilson said, and Arnold's is a Nashville standard-bearer.
