On the shoreline of the city of Lusail, in Qatar, construction is set to begin this year on a new museum, shown here in a rendering. Look through the gallery to see more renderings of Lusail Museum.

Designed by Swiss architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron, the museum is intended to be a "world-class arts institution and global think tank."

The museum will be located on Al Maha Island off the coast of Lusail. This piece of reclaimed land is already home to an amusement park.

A ground-breaking ceremony was held in December 2023. This crescent-shaped "boulevard" will be a central walkway.

Lusail Museum will be 30 meters tall, and have a footprint of 11,000 square meters. The building will have five floors, four of which will be accessible to the public, including the roof terrace.

The roof terrace will also function as an open-air cinema. Architect Jacques Herzog hopes that with its various functions, the museum can attract "new generations" to Lusail.

The structure will feature four "anchor rooms," each with a design inspired by a different part of the Islamic cultural world. The west room, picture in the rendering above, is based on the Aljaferia Palace in Zaragoza, Spain.

This central spiral staircase will lead to the exhibition spaces.
