Desert driver: Salam Almazrouei grew up in the Liwa Desert and knows how to expertly navigate every sand dune.

Sea of sand: Which is just as well. The dunes stretch for miles toward Abu Dhabi's border with Saudi Arabia, and it's easy to get lost.

Sand glamping: Eager to share his love of the desert with others, Al-Mazrouei has created Liwa Nights, a luxury camping experience in Abu Dhabi's remote Empty Quarter.

Peaceful break: Lit only by the moon or stars at night, Liwa Nights offers a peaceful escape. It's "a place to come and switch off for a few days," says Almazrouei.

Tented luxury: Simple but stylish, the tents are furnished with double beds and other comforts more at home in a fancy hotel.

En suite: There's even a bathroom, with flushing toilet and shower, tucked behind a curtain.

Base camp: Liwa Nights has a permanent building with a dining room and bar. There is inside and outside seating.

End of the road: Liwa Nights lies close to the point where the road is swallowed by the desert. There's very little for miles around.

Moreeb Dune: This huge slope of sand, a tourist attraction it its own right, overlooks the site of the annual Liwa Festival.

Sand stormers: The Liwa Festival includes numerous motoring contests, often involving races up the Moreeb Dune.

Dune buggy: One of the highlights of a stay at Liwa Nights is a thrill ride in a dune buggy.

Qasr al Sarab Resort: All-year-round luxury is available in the Qasr al Sarab resort over the dunes from Liwa.
