The dim pinkish light of the midnight sun illuminates the forest in Paksuniemi, north Sweden. The midnight sun is a natural phenomenon occurring in summer months at latitudes north of the Arctic Circle, where the sun remains visible 24 hours a day.

Riksgränsen is a popular summer ski resort situated 250 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. In June, not only can you ski in the midnight sun, but it's sometimes warm enough to wear just a t-shirt and shorts.

North Sweden's now-infamous "Ice Hotel" -- where visitors sleep on a bed made from blocks of frozen ice -- is finally available for bookings in the summer months, albeit at slightly reduced capacity.

The Ice Hotel isn't the only quirky accommodation Lapland has to offer. In recent years a series of "Tree Hotels" have popped up in the pristine forests of Harads, near the Lule river. This "Mirrorcube" room almost disappears into the landscape, while an adjacent treehouse in the shape of a UFO is a little more conspicuous.

Buustamons Mountain Farm is the highest hotel in the Åre mountain range. Perched right by the treeline, a good 723 meters above the sea, the hotel has a fine range of traditional Swedish nibbles on hand, as well as its very own vodka distillery.

A group of determined trekkers set up camp at the foot of Kebnekaise, Sweden's highest mountain. It's just one of the stops along the mammoth "King's Trail" that stretches for 440 kilometers.

With its church and 424 surrounding wooden buildings, Gammelstad is perhaps the best-preserved example of a "church village" in Sweden, and has won UNESCO World Heritage status accordingly.

Fishing under the midnight sun. There are 37 species of game fish to catch in Sweden's crystal clear rivers, the big fish being pike, zander and perch, as well as salmon trout and grayling.

Lapland didn't get its Santa Claus association without good reason. Whatever time of year you arrive, large herds of reindeer are rarely far from view.
