
Lake Nicaragua —
The island of Ometepe was created from two volcanoes rising in Lake Nicaragua, Concepcion and Maderas. It's the world's largest volcanic island inside a freshwater lake.

Lake Nicaragua islets —
A group of 365 islets close to the city of Granada called Las Islets is home to a community of 1,200 people. Lake Nicaragua's freshwater is home to species such as bull sharks and largetooth sawfish.

Catarina overlook —
One of the highest hills surrounding the Apoyo Lagoon, the Catarina viewpoint is a popular Nicaraguan weekend spot. Views of Lake Nicaragua behind the lagoon make for a good photo stop.

Solentiname Islands —
Fishermen row in Solentiname Islands, an archipelago located on the southern end of Lake Nicaragua. The islands are home to a variety of birds and plants.

Lakeside lodge —
With the completion of the Nicaragua Canal, the view from Jicaro Island Ecolodge could change. The hotel on the lake helps provide clean water to a nearby school called Padre Nello, and hires people from the community to work at the lodge.

Deep-fried fritters —
"Bunuelos de yuca y queso" are deep-fried fritters that contain yuca and salty white cheese. The popular dish (served here at the Jicaro Island Ecolodge) is usually served with guacamole and mashed beans.

Iglesia Guadalupe —
Built in the 17th century, the Church of Guadalupe in Granada, on the northwest tip of Lake Nicaragua, once served as a fortress for Nicaraguan President William Walker.

Granada Poetry Festival —
The annual International Poetry Festival in Granada takes place in February. This year's event paid tribute to poet, playwright and artist Enrique Fernandez Morales Granada, with the participation of at least 115 poets from around the world.

Hotel Dario —
The colonial style Hotel Dario in Granada exudes the old world charm of Spanish architecture and bright colors.
