Hotel Marcel: This Brutalist building in New Haven, Connecticut, has become one of America's greenest -- and coolest -- hotels.

Setting records: The hotel is a zero-emission hotel encompassing 165 rooms, a 9,000-plus square-foot conference center, and a full service restaurant.

How does it work? The building runs on 100% renewable electricity for lighting, heating, air-conditioning and hot water, harnessing energy with over 1,000 solar panels on its rooftop and parking canopies.

Light and power: The hotel uses Power over Ethernet (PoE) lighting, a new, low-voltage technology that uses less power than traditional wiring, which reduced the building's lighting energy use by more than 30%

Art with a purpose: King rooms feature original works by a fiber artist who utilized scraps of fabric that would otherwise be thrown out.

A familiar look: The original building was designed by Marcel Breuer, best known for the original Whitney Museum in New York City.

Green score: The hotel has earned both Passive House and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum certifications.

Final mood: Even the hotel itself is "recycled" by choosing to adapt an existing building rather than create a new one.
