Checked bag fees. Your first checked bag won't be included in every JetBlue fare anymore. Here are some other fees that airlines charge to transport all sorts of things.

Your pet. United Airlines charges $125 each way for humans to bring their in-cabin pet in an approved kennel. Acceptable pets include domesticated cats, dogs, rabbits and birds (one per kennel, except birds, which may travel two to a kennel).

A big musical instrument. While Delta Air Lines allows passengers to bring a guitar, violin or smaller musical instrument as a free carry-on baggage item, larger instruments must be checked or get their own bulkhead or other special seats. Your cello must wear its own seat belt and can't block an exit.

A bicycle. JetBlue will check your bicycle for a fee of $50 each way on domestic and some international flights. The bike will count as one of your checked bags. Weight limits apply.

Water-sports gear. American Airlines charges $150 per board for most surfboards, kiteboards, wakeboards or wave skis. But for flights to Brazil, the charge for the first board checked is only $42.50.

Baseball and softball equipment. Southwest Airlines allows baseball and softball players to check one bag of gear for free instead of a free checked bag. The bag generally may have "four bats, one helmet, one pair of cleats, one uniform, one glove, and one pair of batting gloves." (The team's catcher often has additional equipment.) But bags over 50 pounds may be subject to extra fees.
