Destination Hong Kong

Hong Kong is unlike any other Asian city. Its past as a cornerstone of the British Empire is obvious at every turn, from post boxes to street names. Yet this is a proudly Cantonese city, with a superb food scene that's the match of anywhere else on the continent. The views of the towering skyscrapers of Hong Kong Island from Victoria Harbor are iconic, while the Mid-Level Escalators make exploring the Central district's bars, restaurants and backstreets a breeze. Across the water, Kowloon's neon streets are grittier and reward intrepid tourists with an up-close view of the real Hong Kong. Beyond are some of the greenest hiking spaces and emptiest beaches in Asia.

Wind, Water
Palani Mohan's sixth book is a visual and artistic reflection on the feng shui elements - wind, water, wood, metal, earth and fire -- and the chi, or energy, that powers the great harbourside city of Hong Kong. In this thought-provoking reflection he explores the contours of a city that has fascinated him since he made it his home.
"In these pages, I have taken the elements of feng shui to make a personal portrait of the city I love, but also one that captures the spirit that so captivates newcomers and native Hong Kongers alike. The geomancers will tell you that this is no coincidence. Hong Kong, they say, has the most powerful feng shui of any place on earth."

Bio
Indian born, Australian raised, and now living in Hong Kong, Palani's work has been widely published by many of the world's leading publications. He is the author of six books including his latest -- Wind, Water. His work is part of the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London and his images have been shown widely including at the prestigious Visa Pour L'Image in Perpignan, France. He talks about his work and photography around the world, including in the TEDx series and at the Asia Society in Hong Kong and New York, and he has been recognised with awards including World Press Photo, Picture of the Year International, CHIPP, Communication Arts, and Sony International.

  • Sounds of Hong Kong: "I work with an audio-visual magazine called Maekan, and we wanted to create a sound journey through various cities, going around and capturing sounds and producing a track of them. We wanted some visuals to go with it, so this was on a full day of shooting. We took the tram from one end of Hong Kong Island to the other. From the top of the tram, we stopped and I wanted to capture the street scene below, especially the policeman in the light."

  • The Verandah
Down on the Southside of Hong Kong Island -- about 30 minutes from Central -- The Verandah restaurant is a posh dining destination, inside the historic Repulse Bay estate.
In its heyday, the building served as a celebrated hotel (from 1920 to 1982) that once welcomed the likes of Ernest Hemingway and Marlon Brando.
The building was demolished in 1982, but quickly rebuilt to capture its earlier grandeur.
Now a lofty residential development, The Repulse has all the trappings of the 1920s, complete with black-and-white tile floors, grand staircases and antique wooden fixtures.
And visitors can still enjoy afternoon tea or an elegant European meal at The Verandah, which offers views of the South China Sea, a colonial-era atmosphere and live piano music.
Curious about the building's story? There are mini historical exhibits peppered throughout the lobby and restaurants.
