It's hard to know what to gawp at. The elegant brigade of classic cars that recently rallied from Beijing to Shanghai, or the unusual snapshot of modern China captured by Belgian drivers Frederic Goblet and Denis de Wagheneire. The pair photo blogged about their participation in the 5th edition of Classic Car Challenge China (4C), an event that saw 51 classic cars from 26 countries drive through China's rural back roads, bustling cities and national highways. Their story follows...

Beijing to Yesanpo —
This morning, we left the hotel with huge smiles on our faces knowing the rally would begin.

Beijing to Yesanpo —
2 hours before the start, we were loaned a yellow 1971 BMW 2002. The race began after an opening ceremony at the Great Wall (pictured in the background).
Beijing to Yesanpo —
The road became more and more beautiful as we climbed from plains to mountains. A 1963 Porsche 356 followed us along a river.

Beijing to Yesanpo —
Not a classic car!

An Aston Martin DB4 climbed the splendid mountainous roads between Beijing and Yesanpo.

The goats were not to be upstaged by an Aston Martin!

A Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Saab and our BMW formed a convey on the way to Yesanpo.

Beijing to Yesanpo —
We received a lot of attention when we arrived in Yesanpo.

Cars were parked here for the night.

Yesanpo to Shijiazhuang —
Today was the day of contrasts and heavy driving. 340 km in 8 hours, almost nonstop.
Yesanpo to Shijiazhuang —
As we traveled north to south, the landscape became greener and greener.

Yesanpo to Shijiazhuang —
We were surrounded by amazing huge rocks and mountains, on brand new roads with perfect turns. This car is a Nash Metropolitan from 1958.
Yesanpo to Shijiazhuang —
As time went by, we left the gorgeous landscape to discover a different side of mainland China. There were flat, endless villages, and a lot of electric motorcycles.

Yesanpo to Shijiazhuang —
We arrived at a major intersection in a village between Yesanpo and Shijiazhuang. People stared at our cars.

Yesanpo to Shijiazhuang —
Cultural shock: Everybody, yes everybody, has a smartphone in China, even in the most remote areas. They seem to love classic cars, and the blond drivers in particular for some reason. A red Ferrari drove ahead of us.
Yesanpo to Shijiazhuang —
As the day went by, we arrived in bigger cities. Here, a Jaguar Type E is followed by an Aston Martin DB2.

Yesanpo to Shijiazhuang —
What amazed us along the way was the fact that it was Sunday and everyone was working.

Shijiazhuang to Taian —
What strikes us about our journey is the corn. There's this perception that Chinese people eat rice, but we saw corn for 10 straight days!

Shijiazhuang to Taian —
Our BMW was a little thirsty.

Shijiazhuang to Taian —
We met many local people along the way. Most of them had never seen these types of cars before.

Rest day —
During a rest day, we had time to sight-see and make some car repairs. Here is a Corvette Stingray getting serviced.

Taian to Xuzhou —
Each day, the organizer would check our cars and record our departure times.

Taian to Xuzhou —
Today was definitely different. We traveled 330 km today, and what we can say is China is not Switzerland. The rally, for the last few days, has not been a ballad in the countryside with green trees, rivers and turning roads. We are driving through a developing and chaotic China.

Taian to Xuzhou —
We see huge, high rise buildings. It's dusty along the roads.
Taian to Xuzhou —
The pollution this time stood out. Even though the weather was beautiful and the temperature was perfect, the sky seems far away. There's probably not a high life expectancy in this region.
Xuzhou to Yangzhou —
This morning the chief of police congratulated all the teams from all over the world and their beautiful cars. Then he asked, "Do you know the average driving experience in China? 3 years. I trust you all with your great experience to show the way and be respectful." This team is driving a 1951 Chervolet Bel Air.
Xuzhou to Yangzhou —
Also not a classic car!

This car has seen better days.

Xuzhou to Yangzhou —
Along the way, we saw some new buildings topped with traditional-style roofs. This gives a city a special, cultural touch.

A vintage Toyota 4x4 rode alongside us.

Xuzhou to Yangzhou —
We had a brief coffee stop by the river between Xuzhou and Yangzhou.

Yangzhou to Suzhou —
There were checkpoints like these along the way.
Yangzhou to Suzhou —
We were surprised by how common electric scooters are in China.

A Fiat 500 overtakes an overloaded truck.

Nearing the end, we cannot count the number of smiling faces we saw along the way and the thousands of photos taken by locals. We can only imagine what stories they are telling their families. I cannot say we changed anything in those people's lives but they did change ours.

After all the participants crossed the finish line, the organizers held a ceremony. The speeches began, there were fireworks, and we were announced as the 1st place winners of the rally. We held the fastest time across all 10 days.

The journey was an opportunity to get out of our comfort zone and do a rally that was a bit more adventurous than others.

Classic cars are not only about cars, mechanics, and beautiful bodywork, it's about the opportunity to make friends with total strangers. In this case, we were also able to discover a country misunderstood by most and we got to see it from the inside, in a way like no other tourist would do.
After 10 days on the road, Denis and Frederic ended their journey in Shanghai. For more on their adventure, read their detailed day-by-day account.
