Barbara Iweins' photo series "Katalog" is the result of the photographer documenting every single item in her home following a divorce and upheaval.

The process took almost five years.

It was a warts-and-all approach intended to counteract the expertly curated ethos of social media.

"Everybody's trying to protect themselves by showing an idealized version of their lives," Iweins told CNN.

The color-coded organization of "Katalog" made it artful, but it also caused the photographer to reflect on her level of consumption.

Some items belonged to her children.

Iweins believes all her belongings add up to around $124,000.

One item Iweins was surprised by was her abundance of combs.

She admitted to feeling a connection to all possessions.

Now, her work "Katalog" is on show at Rencontres d'Arles photo festival until Sep. 25.

To accompany the exhibition, Iweins has published a new book about the series.
