Women's and men's Olympic triathlons will go ahead Wednesday

This picture taken on July 29, shows the Seine River in Paris, France.

The women’s and men’s Olympic triathlons will go ahead on Wednesday in the French capital, Paris 2024 organizers and World Triathlon announced.

Poor water quality levels in the River Seine had led to the cancellation of numerous training swims and forced the postponement of the men’s triathlon, which was scheduled for Tuesday.

“The results of the latest water analyses, received at 3:20 a.m., have been assessed as compliant by World Triathlon allowing for the triathlon competitions to take place.”

Some background: The decision to hold some swimming events in the river raised eyebrows when it was first announced. Swimming in the Seine has been illegal for a century.

About $1.5 billion (1.4 billion Euros) was spent trying to clean up the river ahead of the Games. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo swam in the river earlier this month to display her confidence in the river’s water quality.

When else you can watch Simone Biles compete this Olympics

Simone Biles competes on the vault at Bercy Arena in Paris, on July 30.

Simone Biles won her eighth Olympic medal on Tuesday in the women’s team finals — becoming the most decorated American gymnast of all time.

But she’s not done yet.

Here are some other opportunities to watch Bile’s compete at the Olympics and possibly add to her medal count:

  • Thursday: Women’s all-around final, 6:15 p.m. local time (12:15 p.m. ET). Suni Lee also is qualified to compete in this event.
  • Saturday: Women’s vault final, 4:20 p.m. local time (10:20 a.m. ET). Jade Carey also qualified to compete in this event.
  • August 5: Women’s balance beam final, 12:38 p.m. local time (6:38 a.m. ET). Lee will compete in this event, too.
  • August 5: Women’s floor exercise final, 2:23 a.m. local time (8:23 a.m. ET). Jordan Chiles qualified to compete in this event as well.

Get caught up: What happened at the Paris Olympics on Tuesday

A little more than three years after a shocking case of the “twisties” caused her to withdraw from Team USA’s attempt at defending its gymnastics team gold, Simone Biles was back under the bright lights of an Olympic final.

The team cruised through the events and took home the gold. It marks Biles’ eighth at a Games, more than any other American in history.

If you missed the action today, here’s a recap of some of the highlights:

  • Gymnastics: Team USA had a huge lead in scoring heading into the final rotation, the floor exercise. The team put up solid scores on all of the other events — vault, balance beam and bars. Powerful floor routines from Suni Lee and Jordan Chiles put Team USA on the brink of winning gold. Biles was the last person scheduled to perform and clinched the remaining needed points. The arena was loud all night — especially when US gymnasts stuck a landing or waved to the crowd. Biles is so good that even her opponents were rooting for her, with some gymnasts clapping and even jumping up and down after her routines.
  • Women’s tennis: US star Coco Gauff lost 7-6 (7), 6-2 in an emotionally charged match against Croatia’s Donna Vekić. Late in the second set, Gauff was in tears while arguing a call. While on Gauff’s serve, a shot from Vekić originally was called out but quickly was overruled by the chair umpire. That gave the break to Vekić and a 4-2 lead before the Croatian went on to win. Another American, Emma Navarro, the 11th seed in the women’s tennis singles, was also knocked out after losing to China’s Zheng Qinwen.
  • Men’s tennis: On the men’s side, the Spanish duo of Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz will move on to the quarterfinals of the men’s doubles. Andy Murray, the former world No. 1, and his partner Dan Evans will also move on to the quarterfinals.
  • Swimming: Australia’s Kaylee McKeown beat Americans Regan Smith and Katharine Berkoff to win gold in the women’s 100m backstroke — breaking her own Olympic record and retaining the title that she claimed in Tokyo. In the men’s 800m freestyle event, Daniel Wiffen won gold and became the first Irish swimmer to win an Olympic medal.
  • Soccer: The USA men’s soccer team secured its place in the Olympic quarterfinals after beating Guinea 3-0 Tuesday. Kevin Paredes made two of those goals. USA currently stands second in the group, after France. France won all three of its group-stage games and will also advance to the quarterfinals.
  • Basketball: The France men’s basketball team pulled out a 94-90 victory over Japan in a game that went right down to the wire. The win moved France to the top of Group B with four points after winning in its first game versus Brazil, which will clash with Germany on Tuesday.
  • Rugby: Canada’s Women’s Sevens rugby team stunned the heavily favored and current world champion Australian sevens squad, defeating it 21-12. Canada ultimately won silver after losing to Black Ferns Sevens — the New Zealand national team — in the gold medal game. In the fight for the bronze medal, the USA Team came out on top after pulling off an upset against Australia in the final minutes of the match. It’s the USA’s first-ever Olympic medal in the sport — for either men or women.

What else we are watching: Organizers are still hoping that the men’s triathlon will take place Wednesday morning in Paris after it was postponed today due to poor water quality levels in the Seine. The women’s event is also scheduled to take place tomorrow. Schedule changes are also being made to the men’s and women’s surfing competitions as a result of “large, stormy surf with unfavorable winds” on Tuesday.

Olympic weather forecast: Paris reached 97 degrees today, making it the hottest day in more than two years

People cool down under the bridge at the Seine river during a heatwave in Paris, on July 30.

As the Olympic Games play out across Paris, the high temperature in the city Tuesday afternoon hit 97 degrees (or 36 degrees Celsius), making it the hottest day in the French capital since July 2022.

The intense heat has also fueled thunderstorms which have developed southwest of the city and are likely to bring rain and wind to Paris over the next few hours. Meteofrance has warned there could be up to 2 inches of rain in the heaviest downpours, as well as wind gusts up to 50 mph.

Temperatures will remain above average in Paris for the remainder of the week but will slowly decline each day, finally reaching values closer to normal (around 79 degrees Fahrenheit or 26 Celsius) by the weekend.

Andy Murray’s tennis career lives to see another day

Andy Murray of Great Britain celebrates with partner Dan Evans after winning against Belgium, in Paris, on July 30.

Andy Murray is moving on to the quarterfinals of the men’s doubles, meaning that his legendary career will last a little bit longer.

Playing his last competitive tournament, the former world No. 1 and his partner Dan Evans defeated Sander Gille and Jordan Vliegen of Belgium 6-3, 6(8)-7(10), 11-9 to reach the last eight.

The British pair had the chance to close out the matchup in the second set with two match points, but Murray has become notorious for doing things the hard way in the latter stages of his career.

Evans double-faulted on the final point of the second, sending the match to a “champions tiebreak.” This time it was Murray and Evans’ turn to save match point before sealing the match with an emphatic Evans smash.

They will face Americans Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul or Robin Haase and Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands in the next round.

Biles on her record-setting medal haul: "I'm not really sure, I don't keep count"

Simone Biles is making history, but she said she’s not keeping count.

With the team gold medal on Tuesday, Biles became the most decorated American Olympic gymnast of all time, adding to her title as the most decorated gymnast of all time.

A reporter listed off some of her accomplishments in her career and asked her what she thought about them.

“Honestly, I would have had to Google that so I’m not really sure, I don’t keep count,” she said. “I don’t keep stats, I just go out there and do what I’m supposed to and I’m doing what I love and enjoying it. So that’s really all that matters to me.”

Team USA likes French food, just not what they're getting in the Paris Olympic Village

Following Team USA’s gymnastics win, a French journalist asked potentially the most loaded question of the post-competition press conference: Do the gold medalists like the food they’re being served in the Olympic Village?

Each member of Team USA looked at each other immediately after the question, as if they wanted to toe the line between being real and being polite.

Simone Biles emphasized that what they were being given in the Village is not proper French cuisine, and there’s a difference between food in the Village and proper Parisian food.

Hezley Rivera was a bit more straight forward about her impression of the fare in the Olympic Village.

“I don’t think it’s very good. At least what we’re having in the dining hall. I definitely think French food is good. But what we’re having in there, I don’t think it’s the best. But it gets the job done,” she said.

Jordan Chiles had kind words to say about the pizza — “It’s cheesy!” — but Henzler said everything else was pretty average.

Biles says she was "calm and ready" going into today's competition — but was still thinking of Tokyo

Hezly Rivera, Jade Carey, Sunisa Lee, Jordan Chiles and Simone Biles of Team USA celebrate after winning gold at Bercy Arena in Paris, on July 30.

Simone Biles said she felt immense relief after her first vault on Tuesday as she helped get Team USA started on their way to a gold medal.

In a moment of humanity, Biles admitted she was still thinking of Tokyo as she took the floor in Brazil.

Teammate Jordan Chiles echoed those thoughts.

“Yo, hallelujah, no flashbacks. No, nothing,” she said. “I was like, OK, like, all she needs to do is just do her normal. So me jumping up and down was just like a relief.”

Andy Murray in deciding tiebreak alongside Dan Evans in last ever competitive tournament

Andy Murray is playing what could be his last tennis match ever, with his second round doubles clash heading to a deciding, first-to-10 tiebreak.

The three-time grand slam champion and his partner Dan Evans took the first set 6-3 though their opponents, Belgian duo Sander Gille and Jordan Vliegen saved two match points in the second to send the match into the breaker.

The US women’s gymnastics team is golden once again.

The Americans — silver medalists at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago — came into Tuesday’s final as the favorites after cruising through qualifying Sunday.

And they delivered in style, dominating the field to win gold in Paris.

Carey set the tone for the day with a 14.800 on her vault.
After Chiles’ wobbly balance beam performance, Lee came up with a 14.600, making her the joint highest scorer on the day on the beam.

Simone Biles says she felt relieved when she landed the vault during Tuesday's team competition

When asked about her feelings coming into the women’s team final on Tuesday, Simone Biles told reporters she was “feeling calm and ready” before the program.

Biles withdrew from the team event in Tokyo after she was affected by “the twisties,” which causes a gymnast to lose track of where their body is and how it moves through the air.

She was replaced by Jordan Chiles, who is her teammate again this year, in the team event and later explained that she needed to prioritize her mental health.

Chiles followed up Biles’ comments at the news conference Tuesday and said, “She is the greatest of all greats.”

Daniel Wiffen becomes the first Irish swimmer to medal at the Olympics

Daniel Wiffen of Ireland reacts during an award ceremony at the Paris La Défense Arena in Paris, on July 30.

No Irish swimmer had ever won an Olympic medal until Daniel Wiffen wrote his name into the history books today

The 23-year-old raced to victory in the 800m freestyle event, breaking the Olympic record in the process.

Wiffen entered the final as the fastest qualifier and spent much of the race matching Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri. Wiffen timed his last 50m excellently, moving ahead to set a time of 7:38:19. Ireland claimed its first gold medal of the Games with the result.

Paltrinieri ceded second to Team USA’s Bobby Finke in the final stretch, and the American ended up winning the silver medal, finishing just 0.56 seconds behind Wiffen. Paltrinieri took bronze.

This Australian swimmer just broke her own Olympic record

Kaylee McKeown of Australia competes in the Women's 100m Backstroke Final in Nanterre, France, on July 30.

Australia’s Kaylee McKeown edged in front of the Americans Regan Smith and Katharine Berkoff to win gold in the women’s 100m backstroke.

McKeown surged ahead in the final 50 meters after the Team USA swimmers gained the initial advantage. In the end, she broke her own Olympic record and retained the title that she claimed in Tokyo.

The Aussie finished with a time of 57.33 seconds, ahead of Smith’s 57.66 and Berkoff’s 57.98. The earned silver and bronze respectively.

Berkoff emulates her father with the result. David Berkoff won four Olympic medals across the 1988 and 1992 Games.

US men's soccer team advances to Olympics quarterfinals

United States' Kevin Paredes is congratulated after scoring his third goal during the men's soccer match between the United States and Guinea at Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium in Saint-Etienne, France on July 30.

The USA men’s soccer team secured its place in the Olympic quarterfinals after beating Guinea 3-0 Tuesday.

Kevin Paredes nailed in the third goal in the 77th minute. He also scored in the first half, along with Djordje Mihailovic.

USA goalkeeper Patrick Schulte knocked away a close attempt on the goal by Guinea with just two minutes of added stoppage left.

This is the first time the US and Guinea have played each other at the Olympics, according to USA Soccer. In fact, this is Team USA’s first time playing in Olympic men’s soccer tournament since 2008.

USA currently stands second in the group, after France. France won all three of its group-stage games and will also advance to the quarterfinals. Team USA lost its first match to France last week before defeating New Zealand over the weekend.

Brazil wins its first team medal in gymnastics

Brazil's team celebrates after winning a bronze metal at the Bercy Arena in Paris, on July 30.

Brazil placed third in the women’s team gymnastics final, finishing less than one point behind Italy to take home the bronze. This is the first team medal for Brazil in gymnastics.

The team includes Rebeca Andrade, who became Brazil’s first Olympic champion in women’s gymnastics in 2021 when she won the gold medal on vault and silver in the women’s individual all-around competition at the Tokyo Olympics.
