First big bracket buster: McNeese State University earned the first notable upset of the tournament as the 12th-seeded Cowboys held off a late rally by No. 5 Clemson in Rhode Island. And in the highly anticipated showdown between two championship-winning coaches, John Calipari’s Arkansas edged Bill Self’s Kansas.

• Top seeds in action: Among the top seeds, Auburn, after an early scare, trounced Alabama State while Midwest region No. 1 seed Houston cruised past Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.

No. 3 Texas Tech avoid upset scare, hang on to edge past No. 14 UNC Wilmington

It was probably a lot closer than they would’ve liked, but the Texas Tech Red Raiders are through to the round of 32 after defeating UNC Wilmington 82-72 in the final game of the day.

Kerwin Walton led the way for Texas Tech, scoring a game-high 27 points, while Elijah Hawkins flirted with a triple-double – 13 points, 10 assists, and nine boards.

“I think it’s the fact that we got a lot of grit, a lot of toughness and I think that’s what really carried us tonight,” Walton told the truTV broadcast after the game.

The Red Raiders will next play against No. 11 Drake on Saturday.

Texas Tech cruising as the game comes to a close

For a good portion of the second half, Texas Tech was on the ropes but turned it up late to take a double-digit lead as the game enters the final minute.

Elijah Hawkins and Darrion Williams came up clutch for the Red Raiders, scoring several key buckets down the stretch to pull away from the Seahawks.

The Red Raiders have hit their stride, taking command and stretching their lead to six with just four minutes remaining in the game.

Kerwin Walton overcomes cold spell, knocks down two triples as Red Raiders regroup

The spark behind Texas Tech’s first-half dominance, Kerwin Walton’s has re-found his shooting stroke.

After icing over in the second half, bricking four straight threes, he’s checked back in the game and splashed two buckets in a row from range.

Both teams are neck-and-neck with fewer than eight minutes to go in the contest

Frantic moments in Denver between Michigan and UC San Diego

It’s end-to-end action in Denver as the Wolverines and Tritons desperately battle for a spot in the second round of the NCAA tourney. There’s 42.8 seconds to play.

UC San Diego and Michigan are trading leads in the final minutes

The UCSD Tritons battled all the way back to tie their game against the Michigan Wolverines at 63 all.

The Tritons even took the lead for a possession before Michigan fired back with a Tre Donaldson three to regain a one-point lead. There’s less than 2 minutes to go in this one.

Final score: St. John's 83, Omaha 53

Chants of “Rick Pitino!” echoed around the arena in Providence as St. John’s put the finishing touches on a blowout win over Omaha.

The Red Storm put the hurt on Omaha in the second half, running away with a big 83-53 victory to get their March Madness run started.

The Mavericks made it interesting in the first half, but ultimately couldn’t keep up with the Johnnies once their shots started falling.

No. 14 UNC Wilmington take the lead against No. 3 Texas Tech

UNC Wilmington are in the lead! The Seahawks are proving to be no fluke as they look to become the first No. 14 seed to stun a No. 3 seed for the first time since last year. Remember Oakland’s famed win over Kentucky?

The Red Raiders are struggling to finish. After scoring 15 points in the first half, the Red Raiders need Kerwin Walton to start making some buckets.

Walton knocked down a three early in the second half but has since missed his last four attempts as the Red Raiders hold on to a two-point advantage with 15 minutes left.

Tritons cut Wolverines' lead to 3 with less than 4 minutes to play

NCAA tournament newcomer UC San Diego isn’t flinching in their showdown with March Madness stalwarts Michigan.

After spotting Michigan a 10-0 lead to start the game and trailing by as many as 15 points, the Tritons have cut the Wolverines’ lead to just 3 points with less than four minutes to play.

Tyler McGhie is leading the way for UCSD with 20 points in the game.

Wolverine fans are in for a nervy finish in Denver…

Upset watch in Wichita (again)! No. 14 UNC Wilmington looking to knock off Texas Tech

The Seahawks have picked up where they left off, coming all the way back to tie this one as the Texas Tech upset watch is officially underway.

Texas Tech and UNC Wilmington second half gets underway

The Red Raiders have gotta be kicking themselves — letting the Seahawks claw back within four points at the end of the first half.

If Texas Tech can shake off their sluggish end to the first half, they should punch their ticket forward — but UNC Wilmington’s got different plans, plotting for chaos to end Day 1 of the NCAA Tournament.

Can the Seahawks flip the script for a jaw-dropping upset? We shall see as the second half is under way.

St. John’s is just destroying Omaha now.

It’s not gotten any better for the Mavericks and it’s just cruise control to the end here for the Red Storm.

Of the 34 million or so brackets that were filled out across all those platforms, .1377% of brackets remain perfect after the UCLA victory.

Wolverines weather the storm and re-establish double digit lead

After a flurry of UC San Diego offense saw Michigan’s 15-point lead shrink to just three, the Wolverines have found their footing and re-established a firm lead against the Tritons.

UCSD appears fatigued after their frenetic run, but they’ll need to find a second wind if the Tritons are to earn a win in their first-ever NCAA tournament.

UNC-Wilmington puts together a 15-3 run to close out the first half

Texas Tech needs to regroup here.

The Red Raiders seemed to have taken their foot off the pedal since taking a double-digit lead, allowing the Seahawks to close out the half with a 15-3 run and cut the deficit to four points heading into the half.

UC San Diego run has turned a laugher into a nail-biter

UC San Diego has turned a blowout into a thriller with a 15-3 run against Michigan.

The Tritons scored 12 unanswered points in just over two minutes to trim a 15-point lead down to just three.

St. John's has turned a tight contest with Omaha into a blowout

If the question was could Omaha withstand this haymaker from St. John’s, the answer appears to be an emphatic no.

The Red Storm is now up by 20 and seems like they’re trying to prove head coach Rick Pitino, and his assertion that his team does not shoot well, wrong. St. John’s is shooting 45% from the field, including 42.3% from behind the arc.

The Big East champions are basically in cruise control at this point and have Omaha on their heels. It’s going to be a long final 12 minutes or so for the Mavericks.
