And across the vast skies, golden eagles, trained by handlers, soar and hunt for food in a tradition that’s been practiced for more than 2,000 years.
A gateway for global growth
These mountain roads and valley paths have brought people together across borders for thousands of years. Once a vital hub for merchants along the ancient Silk Road, the Kyrgyz Republic continues to play a key role in facilitating transnational trade, transit, and cultural exchange, as witnessed by a 530km railway that is being constructed to bolster connections between China, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan.
By carrying on its legacy as a gateway between the East and the West, Kyrgyzstan has become one of the fastest-growing economies in Central Asia and among the member States of the Eurasian Economic Union. Its GDP has doubled since 2022, reaching an almost 12% year-on-year increase in the first half of 2026. This is a result of ongoing structural transformations, increased investment attractiveness, and more international economic cooperation.
A rich and unique culture
In recent years, the Kyrgyz Republic has significantly strengthened its position in the international arena. Complementing this global stance is a rich and unique heritage that is deeply rooted in a reverence for the land. This cultural identity is best exemplified by the World Nomad Games, the opening ceremony of which coincides with the nation’s Independence Day this year.
Founded in 2014 as a way to preserve and revive nomadic traditions, the Games are a thrilling spectacle, featuring traditional sports such as kok boru – a polo-like competition that involves a goat carcass – equestrian games, and archery, alongside cultural performances, crafts, and a plethora of other activities. Since its inception, the event has become a popular attraction for overseas tourists and has grown into an international platform for knowledge-sharing, intercultural dialogue, and sustainable development.
Honoring the past, heralding the future
To help the nation chart its ongoing path forward, the Kyrgyz Republic recently announced its National Development Program – a strategic blueprint that outlines the country’s targets from 2025 to 2030. Highlights from the program include commitments to reach a GDP of $30 billion and to reduce unemployment to less than 5% within the next five years.
The Kyrgyz Republic has also been elected a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, reflecting the world’s recognition of its contribution to peace, security, and sustainable development. Such contributions include its part in the global agenda for the protection and advancement of mountain territories. Through its “Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions” initiative, it is bringing international efforts together to address the environmental and socio-economic challenges faced by mountain States.
Today, Kyrgyzstan positions itself as the “Snow Leopard of Central Asia”. Like its spirit animal, it demonstrates strength, resilience, and an openness to adapt to change. By embracing progress without losing sight of its heritage, it is expanding opportunities for investment, innovation, and international collaboration while ensuring its harmonious coexistence between people and nature prevails.
