In cities around the world, familiar urban spaces are being asked to do more. According to United Nations data, nearly seven out of 10 people worldwide are expected to live in urban areas by 2050, highlighting the growing need for spaces that foster social connection while supporting local economic resilience. Against this backdrop, mixed-use environments are increasingly seen as practical ways for cities to achieve these ambitions.
In Bangkok—the Thai capital that topped Euromonitor International’s list of the world’s most visited cities, welcoming 30.3 million international arrivals in 2024—leading retail developer Siam Piwat has introduced NEXTOPIA, a living prototype that positions retail as an engine for sustainability, co-creation, and shared community experiences. Moving beyond shopping or design, the concept integrates innovation and participation into everyday life, with the aim to inspire imagination and encourage dialogue around urban living.
Co-creating the future today
Located within Siam Paragon, NEXTOPIA was developed as part of the 20th-anniversary evolution of the multi-award-winning lifestyle destination, which spans more than 500,000 square meters (5.38 million sq ft) of retail, entertainment, and dining space.

At first glance, NEXTOPIA presents a layered environment shaped by art, architecture, and nature-inspired design. The Tree of Life anchors the main entrance, while The Spiral—a sculptural staircase—connects the space to the fourth floor, where EATELIER introduces a dining-led entertainment zone. Elsewhere across the two-level, 15,000-square-meter (161,460 sq ft) space, the Forest Canopy and Ocean Canopy transform recycled materials and marine waste into immersive art installations.
Beyond its physical form, NEXTOPIA reflects a broader shift in sustainable urban planning toward co-creation. Its development brings together more than 50 cross-sector innovation partners supporting infrastructure, alongside over 30 community groups and a network of more than 40 brands and 300 SMEs. Collectively, these collaborators contribute to value-driven initiatives grounded in sustainability and inclusivity.
Sustainability in action
NEXTOPIA aligns its programming and partnerships with global sustainability frameworks, working alongside organizations such as United Nations Global Compact Network Thailand (UNGCNT), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), World Food Program (WFP), United Nations Development Program – Biodiversity Finance Initiative (UNDP BIOFIN), and World Wildlife Fun (WWF) for activities designed to raise awareness and support fundraising efforts.
This approach embeds sustainability directly into the business environment, integrating innovation, art, data, technology, and human participation into tangible applications. Examples include a kinetic floor that converts movement into energy, clean energy systems that transform sunlight into renewable power, and radiant cooling complemented by the Cooling Waterfall.
Additional features such as an on-site vertical farm and The Globe—a data-driven installation drawing on information from National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and Thailand’s Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA)—translate abstract environmental concepts into visible, interactive experiences. This emphasis on practical demonstration supports experiential learning, contributing to greater public awareness and encouraging behavioral change around sustainability issues.

Innovating the retail experience
Research indicates that modern consumers increasingly seek experiential and socially meaningful elements in physical retail environments, supporting urban spaces that foster cultural interaction, community engagement, and sustainability outcomes.
NEXTOPIA reflects this shift through immersive design and programming, including workshops, talks, and a dedicated Community Room that supports ongoing dialogue and experimentation. Rather than focusing on short-term engagement, the space positions itself as a ‘life transformation’ environment, where retail encounters are linked to longer-term social and environmental awareness.
The project has also achieved Fitwel 2-Star Certification, making it the first multi-tenant retail project in Thailand to do so. Fitwel, a global certification system for healthy buildings, focuses on improving human health and well-being—areas that align with broader ambitions under the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11) to promote more inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable urban environments.

By situating NEXTOPIA within one of the city’s most prominent landmarks, Siam Piwat positions Bangkok as an active contributor to global conversations on sustainable urban living. The project illustrates how collaboration across brands, SMEs, communities, and international institutions can be mobilized within a commercial setting to support more inclusive and resilient cities.
