A “blue wave” swept the United States on Election Day, with Democrats flipping control of both the House and Senate in a resounding and historic midterm victory.
The results were a visceral rejection of President Donald Trump's actions in his second term. Republicans were washed out of power in places the party hadn’t lost in a generation — and sometimes more. Only twice in the last 50 years had control of both chambers changed in the same cycle.
The exact sizes of the Democrats’ majorities are still yet to be determined as the final results are counted.
History was also made in some gubernatorial races on Tuesday. Georgia Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms is set to become the first Black female governor in US history. US Rep. Byron Donalds, a Republican, was elected the first Black governor of Florida. And Gina Hinojosa was elected as the first Latina governor of Texas.
Here are some of the stories that made headlines over the past week, as well as some photos that caught our eye.
