More than 1,200 bodies have been recovered as search-and-rescue operations continue.
The glacier that collapsed, triggering the floods, showed visible signs of instability days before the disaster, according to a new report. Dramatic footage showed a torrent of water hitting the mountainous region, submerging villages and wiping out bridges.
“It is time not only for this region to become more vigilant, but also for us to strongly present before the international community the disasters we are being forced to face as a result of climate change,” Nepali Prime Minister Balendra Shah said on social media. “Why did the ice and rock collapse? Where did so much water come? Human civilization must find answers to these questions.”
