Renowned director, producer and writer Francis Ford Coppola received the American Film Institute Life Achievement Award at a gala tribute in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Coppola, 86, was the 50th recipient of the award.

Coppola has embraced a variety of genres during a career that has spanned decades. The five-time Oscar winner has been behind some of the most highly regarded films ever made, including "The Godfather" trilogy, "Apocalypse Now" and "The Conversation."

Coppola and his late wife, award-winning film documentarian Eleanor Coppola, were at the helm of one of the most prolific and successful filmmaking families in Hollywood. Their children Roman and Sofia are both successful filmmakers. Actors Nicolas Cage, Talia Shire and Jason Schwartzman are also part of the extended Coppola family.
