Republican JD Vance and Democrat Tim Walz faced each other Tuesday night in what will be this year’s only vice presidential debate.

The matchup between Vance, the 40-year-old Ohio senator, and Walz, the 60-year-old Minnesota governor, took place in New York without a live audience. 

The debate was moderated by Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan of CBS News. It came a few weeks after Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump had their debate in Philadelphia.

Vance is in his first term as a US senator. The venture capitalist and author of the best-selling memoir “Hillbilly Elegy” was elected in 2022 after receiving a boost from Trump in a contentious Republican primary.

Walz was elected governor in 2018. Before that, he served 12 years in Congress, representing a conservative-leaning rural district that, both before and after his tenure, has been mostly dominated by Republicans.

With just five weeks until Election Day, the debate offered one of the last major opportunities for each candidate to make a case for their ticket. It was a policy-heavy showdown, where the candidates were asked about topics that included the Middle East, abortion and the economy.
