Former President Donald Trump was injured in a shooting Saturday during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The incident is being investigated as an assassination attempt. After the first pop of shots rang out, Trump fell to the ground, and Secret Service agents rushed the stage to surround him. After several moments, Trump was brought to his feet by the agents, and he appeared to be calling out to the crowd and could be seen pumping his fist as he was whisked away into a vehicle offstage.
The Secret Service later said in a statement that Trump was safe. Trump said in a Truth Social statement that a bullet pierced the upper part of his right ear.
The shooter was killed by the Secret Service, the agency said. It also said that one rally attendee is dead and two were critically injured. The FBI identified the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, who lived in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, about 35 miles south of the rally location.
A law enforcement source and a police officer at the scene told CNN that the shooter was positioned on a building rooftop just outside the rally venue.
