A 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck central Morocco on Friday, September 8, killing at least 2,900 people. It was the most powerful earthquake to hit that part of the North African nation in more than a century, with much of the impact in hard-to-reach mountainous areas.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the epicenter was located about 72 kilometers (44.7 miles) southwest of historic Marrakech, a city of some 840,000 people and a popular tourist destination.
