Cicely Tyson, an award-winning actress who broke barriers for Black actresses, has died at the age of 96.
Tyson's career lasted decades, but she is perhaps best remembered for the 1974 TV miniseries "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman." The role earned her Emmy Awards for actress of the year and best actress in a drama.
Tyson was nominated for an Academy Award in 1973, and she received an honorary Oscar in 2018. She has also won a Tony Award.
In 2016, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
"In her long and extraordinary career, Cicely Tyson has not only succeeded as an actor, she has shaped the whole course history," President Barack Obama said at the award ceremony.
Her award citation noted "her achievements as an actor, her devotion to her faith, and her commitment to advancing equality for all Americans -- especially women of color."
