Brazil is one of the few large countries in the world where coronavirus cases — and death rates — are still rising.

It is Latin America's hardest-hit country, with confirmed cases climbing by the thousands each day.

Only the United States has more confirmed cases than Brazil, which has passed 2 million. More than 75,000 people have died.

After months of downplaying the virus, deriding it as just a "little flu," President Jair Bolsonaro tested positive for Covid-19, he announced on July 7.

Bolsonaro tells the press July 7 <a href="index.php?page=&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cnn.com%2F2020%2F07%2F07%2Famericas%2Fbrazil-bolsonaro-positive-coronavirus-intl%2Findex.html" target="_blank">that he tested positive</a> for the novel coronavirus. "I have to admit, I thought I had gotten it earlier, considering my very dynamic activity in the face of the people," he said. "And I can tell you more, I am the President and I am on the front line, I don't run away from my responsibility nor do I shy away from the people."
