Kirsten Gillibrand, a US senator from New York, ended her presidential campaign on Wednesday, August 28.

"Today, I am ending my campaign for president," Gillibrand said on Twitter. "I am so proud of this team and all we've accomplished. But I think it's important to know how you can best serve. To our supporters: Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. Now, let's go beat Donald Trump and win back the Senate."

Gillibrand rose to national prominence in recent years as a fierce critic of Trump, an advocate for women's issues and a forceful proponent of the #MeToo movement.

She was a former US House representative in a heavily Republican district of New York. In 2009, she was tapped to fill Hillary Clinton's US Senate seat when Clinton was named secretary of the US State Department.

Gillibrand was born Kirsten Elizabeth Rutnik in 1966. Her parents, Douglas and Polly, were both attorneys. In May 2017, Gillibrand <a href="index.php?page=&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FKirstenGillibrand%2Fphotos%2Ffpp.6820348410%2F10154864364148411%2F%3Ftype%3D3%26theater" target="_blank" target="_blank">posted this old photo</a> of her and her mother to Facebook. "To my mother, who's always been in my corner, and to every mom out there who gives it her all every single day: Happy Mother's Day!" she wrote.
