The Democratic Party will regain control of the US House of Representatives for the first time in eight years, CNN projects, but the Republican Party will hold onto control of the US Senate following Tuesday's midterm elections.
The results set up a divided Congress going into 2020, when President Donald Trump will be seeking re-election. Many viewed the midterms as a referendum on Trump and his policies.
There were also some historic firsts on Tuesday, including the first Muslim women to be elected to Congress (Michigan's Rashida Tlaib and Minnesota's Ilhan Omar), the first Native American women to be elected to Congress (New Mexico's Deb Haaland and Kansas' Sharice Davids), the youngest woman to be elected to Congress (29-year-old Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in New York), and the first openly gay man to be elected as governor of a state (Colorado's Jared Polis). US Rep. Marsha Blackburn will be Tennessee's first female senator.
