
Comedian Roseanne Barr rose to fame with the hit television sitcom "Roseanne," which ran from 1988-1997 before being rebooted in 2018. The new show was canceled by ABC this week after a series of controversial tweets by Barr, who's been no stranger to controversy during her career.

Barr appears on "The Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson in January 1987. Barr did standup comedy during the 1980s and had an HBO special in 1986.

"Roseanne" premiered in October 1988 and focused on a working-class family in Illinois. Barr played the plainspoken matriarch Roseanne Connors. Her husband was played by John Goodman.

Barr made her film debut in 1989 with the black comedy "She-Devil."

Barr holds her fingers in her ears as she screams the National Anthem before a Major League Baseball game in July 1990. She ended it by grabbing her crotch and spitting on the ground. She said she was trying to be funny, but the performance was roundly condemned. President George H.W. Bush called it "disgraceful."

Barr appears on a "Saturday Night Live" skit with Chris Farley in February 1991. She hosted the show several times.

Barr and comedian Tom Arnold renew their vows during a ceremony in June 1991. The two had married a year earlier. It was Barr's second marriage. She had three children from her earlier marriage to Bill Pentland, which lasted from 1974-1990.

To help promote the "Roseanne" reboot in March 2018, a subway car in New York was designed to resemble the show's living-room set.

"Roseanne" was rebooted with members of the show's original cast. The premiere got huge ratings, and production had already begun on a second season when the show was canceled.
