Edward Frampton, an 81-year-old veteran of the U.S. Air Force, rests at his home in Cayce, South Carolina, in October 2014. Photographer Brian Driscoll photographed Frampton before his death on December 14, 2014.

Frampton was 18 when this photo was taken in 1951.

Frampton walks into the kitchen of his Cayce home as his daughter, Christine Power, waits to help him get dressed and prepare for the day. Before his death, Frampton had throat cancer, rheumatic fever and pneumonia.

Power comforts her father in the bathroom. Power is a nurse, and she came almost every day to help her father with whatever he needed. "She was happy to bend over backward to continue to work and do all these things with her chin up," Driscoll said. "She knew her role and she did it with a certain pride. I thought it was really beautiful to be able to document that."
