Lizzy saw the sunset and sunrise on a recent trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina. Reluctant to get up so early at first, she finally described the scene as "pretty" and then went back to playing in the sand. "She is 5, after all," her father said.

Monday, Lizzy's mother woke her up to see a stunning rainbow right outside their front door. Again, the little girl was reluctant to get up from her nap at first, but then became fascinated by the colors and size of the rainbow.

Lizzy and her best friend Addison have gone on several adventures together. They enjoy the zoo and museums, and Lizzy's dad says his daughter is a "real rock hound." She loves interesting rock shapes and science of any kind. "She is certainly takes after her father," her mother says.

Her parents hope to soon take Lizzy to see this country's beautiful natural locations, such as Mesa Park, Yellowstone, and the Grand Canyon. Next year, they will even visit Rome.

While Lizzy may ultimately lose her sight and hearing, scientists say she will not be "left alone in the dark." Early intervention is vital and the support from her parents and community are key, says Dr. Lotfi Merabet, a professor of ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. "Some 20-30 years from now she will likely remember what her mother looked like and what her father looked like and what a sunrise looked like. She will experience the world around her in a tremendous way still."
