It has been more than 20 years since "Clueless" hit theaters on July 19, 1995. These snapshots of the film's stars were taken on set by makeup supervisor Alan Friedman. Instead of relying on mirrors, he used Polaroids -- like this one of Stacey Dash ("Dionne") -- to review various looks he was trying. His photos are featured in Jen Chaney's book "As If!," published by Touchstone, a division of Simon & Schuster.

The film starred Alicia Silverstone as flaky but fearless protagonist Cher.

The late Brittany Murphy was Tai, a new girl in school. Cher gives her a makeover.

Paul Rudd played Josh, Cher's former stepbrother and eventual love interest.

Donald Faison was Murray, Dionne's fast-talking boyfriend.

Elisa Donovan played Amber, a snooty classmate.

Breckin Meyer was skateboarder Travis, who romances Tai.

Jeremy Sisto played Elton, who puts the moves on Cher after she tries to pair him with Tai.

Dan Hedaya was Mel Horowitz, Cher's gruff but loving litigator dad.

Wallace Shawn was Mr. Wendell Hall, a teacher who shows remarkable patience with Cher's abysmal debate skills.

Twink Caplan played another teacher, Miss Toby Geist, whose romance with Mr. Hall is orchestrated by Cher.

Justin Walker was Cher's crush Christian, whose secret dooms their brief dalliance.
