Elena Monaco shared this photo of herself as a baby riding in the front seat of her car. She is sitting her godmother's lap in her godparent's car in 1976. Because she was so young, Monaco does not remember much of the '70s, but finds the clothes, and the relaxed child car seat laws, fascinating.

Norm Alger submitted this photo of his family in South Carolina in 1972. He loved to play outside with his friends during the 70s. "As kids we all played together, built forts, played tag, sports, and were adventurous," Alger said. "We loved being outside and riding our bikes and skateboards and knew we had to head home when the street lights came on."

Norm Alger said that his favorite part of the 70s was that people often interacted face-to-face, something he thinks that society has since lost. The photo above is of him (left) and his cousin at a beach in Virginia in 1976.

There's a certain image of the 1970s: the disco, the fashion, but how true is it? CNN readers shared their images on iReport and showed us their memories of the era in photos, including, yes, an early example of a selfie from Maxine Hoffpauir in 1979. "[I] fell in love and got married in the '70s," she said. "Truly was the best of times."

Mary Resnik, left, is the oldest of three sisters from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, who got into the '70s music scene. The Corsick Sisters "had Temptations moves and wore disco dresses, pantsuits & hot pants. We dated guys that wore angel flights pants!" She recalls performing in Nevada casinos and hanging out with the likes of Cheech & Chong and Kenny Rogers.

Elton John was one of the biggest music stars of the '70s and Kimberli Goodner's cousin resembled him in this photo, while she was compared to Shirley Temple (despite the Farrah Fawcett hair). She said she and her cousin were like brother and sister in Edwardsville, Illinois.

KISS makeup was prevalent among fans in the '70s, including young Steven Murray, right, and his friend in Houston. If he loved anything more than the band KISS, it was "Star Wars." Like many kids in 1977, he became obsessed with the blockbuster movie.

Charon Gooding had to share this photo of her parents (her mother pregnant with her) on the way to a party in early 1970. "We lived in Seattle and there were plenty of clubs with live music," her mother recalled. "We never attended Woodstock but the era reminds me of free spirited partying, sexuality, and expression through music."

Recalling her mother's frizzy hairstyle from 1978 in Corpus Christi, Texas, Brandy Rodriguez called the '70s the "decade of the 'fro."

"People were united [in the Maramures Mountains, where this photo was shot] and they were happy with their own culture, no designers for clothes (in these parts) so all had almost the same style," he said. Even for the wild '70s, this family portrait from Ohio is unusual. "My mom was a theater major before she and my father married," said Frank James. "She would dress up as Mrs. Santa, an Indian Princess, the Easter Bunny and other holiday characters and come to our grade school to entertain. She decided to put together a "family clown skit." We would go to churches, fairs, and holiday parties and entertain with our skit and playing our instruments."

"The Brady Bunch" had nothing on Julia Ringgold's family, the Blakemores of Thousand Oaks, California. Just like the classic sitcom, a mother of three married a father of three. "There were always lots of fun activities, games and lots of kids running around our huge house!" Ringgold said.

Jennifer Moran found the 1970s to be a great time to grow up. Here she is in her Baltimore neighborhood in 1977. "It was a tight community and very much like growing up in Mayberry. Everybody knew everybody," she said.

Was photo-bombing invented here? Marjorie Zien relaxed with friends upon graduating high school in 1978 in Albany, New York.

One mustn't forget 1970s furniture along with the fashion, as demonstrated here in 1975 Seattle by Jeff Unger's father.

Joy Lewandowski remembers trips to Walt Disney World from her home in Macomb Township, Michigan.

Karen feels like her mother and aunt were the epitome of the '70s in this photo in 1971 in Whitter, California.

Christina Tangalakis' brother and father hit the dance floor at this 1974 wedding.
