Access Mobile was born, and their first product was Clinic Communicator -- a platform that facilitates doctor-patient interaction through text messages and email.

Gifted Mom, Cameroon —
Cameroonian entrepreneur Alain Nteff is the co-founder of Gifted Mom, a mHealth startup using low-cost technology, pictured inset, to provide medical advice to women in rural areas.

U-Report, Zambia —
A Zambian HIV counselor looks at phone text messages coming up on the U-report platform for HIV and AIDS awareness at a call center in Lusaka. The U-Report is a youth-centered program created by the Zambia National AIDS Council to provide confidential, free of charge, individualized and interactive counseling services on HIV and AIDS.

Medical Diagnostic, South Africa —
South African biotechnologist Ashley Uys has developed a "rapid test" kit which can diagnose malaria as well as which strain you are suffering from. He explains it can also identify if your suggested course of treatment is working effectively. Using blood samples, the test can offer results in less than 30 minutes.

Flying Doctors Nigeria —
Ola Orekunrin had a budding career in the UK but gave it all up to return to her family's roots in Nigeria. Following the tragic and preventable death of her 12-year-old sister, the young doctor founded Flying Doctors Nigeria, the first medical air service in West Africa.
