Omaha police Officer Kerrie Orozco -- part of her department's gang unit -- was shot and killed a day before her baby daughter, who was born premature, was set to be released from the hospital.

Police say Orozco died in a shootout involving Marcus Wheeler, a convicted felon and known gang member. Omaha police were trying to arrest him in connection with another shooting.

Orozco was active in her community. Here she participates with her police department's "Shop with a Cop" program.

Since 2009, Orozco coached at the North Omaha Boys and Girls Club, where an official there called her "like a mom away from home" for many children.

Orozco also volunteered with the Special Olympics, including serving as president of the Police Officers Ball benefiting that organization.
