
Hattiesburg, Mississippi, police officers Benjamin Deen, left, and Liquori Tate were shot while conducting a traffic stop on May 9. They were taken to a hospital but did not survive their injuries. The shooting marked the first time in 30 years that an officer was killed in the line of duty in Hattiesburg, according to the mayor. Deen was 34. Tate was 24.

Sgt. Greg Moore of the Coeur d'Alene (Idaho) Police Department was found lying in the road on May 5 after a resident heard a gunshot and called for help. A few minutes earlier, Moore, 43, told dispatch he had stopped a "suspicious male."

New York Police Department officer Brian Moore was shot May 2 while trying to question a man in Queens. Moore, 25, died at a hospital two days later. Thousands of his fellow officers attended his funeral. His partner, Erik Jansen, was also shot but survived.

Wisconsin State Trooper Trevor Casper, 21, was shot and killed March 24 while chasing a bank robbery suspect. It was Casper's first solo assignment as a state trooper. Lt. Col. Brian Rahn of the Wisconsin State Patrol said Casper's handling of the fatal encounter was "absolute textbook."

Michael Johnson, a veteran of the police force in San Jose, California, was killed March 24 while responding to a report of a man threatening to kill himself. When officers arrived at the scene, they were met with gunfire. Johnson, 38, was the first San Jose police officer killed in the line of duty in 14 years.

Navajo Nation Police Officer Alex Kee Yazzie was killed March 19 in a shootout with a suspect near the Arizona-New Mexico state line. Here, a member of the U.S. Marine Corps presents a American flag to his family during the burial service.

Deputy U.S. Marshal Josie Wells was shot and killed March 10 while serving an arrest warrant on a murder suspect in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Wells, 27, had served four years with the U.S. Marshals Service. He came from a family of law enforcement officers.

Philadelphia Police Officer Robert Wilson III was buying a gift for his son on March 5 when two men held up the store where he was shopping. Wilson, who was in uniform, confronted the men and a firefight broke out. Wilson, 30, was shot and killed. Police said security footage showed the eight-year veteran stepping away from the store's patrons and employees to keep them out of the crossfire.

Veteran Fulton County Police Detective Terence Green was killed in the line of duty in the early hours of March 4. He was shot in the head while searching a neighborhood after reports of gunfire. Green, 48, had served as an officer for more than two decades.
