Lilly Pulitzer's limited edition collection for Target offers the queen of bold American resortwear's bold designs at discounted prices. For example, a dress similar to this one goes for around $180 at department stores. This version is priced at $38 on Target.com.

A sorority-girl favorite, the Lilly Pulitzer brand is best known for shift dress designs in vibrant prints.

The 250-item collection features apparel, accessories and shoes for women and girls, as well as home decor.

Target often teams up with high-end designers to create limited edition fashion lines. The collections -- from designers such as Alexander McQueen, Prabal Gurung (a favorite of Kate, Duchess of Cambridge) and Jason Wu (who designed one of Michelle Obama's inaugural gowns) -- tend to create lots of buzz and sell out within hours, and the Lilly Pulitzer collection was no exception.

Lilly Pulitzer has a loyal following. Fans of the brand started scoping the collection weeks ahead of time to make their shopping lists.

The line features 15 prints made exclusively for Target.

The sale got off to a rough start online when shoppers started visiting the site at midnight to find they could not purchase items.

Online shoppers complained that by the time they tried to check out, their items were no longer available.

Shoppers started lining up outside Target stores as early as 5 a.m. in some parts of the country.

Pictures on social media showed stores emptied of inventory within minutes of opening their doors.

Pulitzer died in 2013 at the age of 81, but the brand lives on. Her sleeveless, collarless shift dresses became a signature of the Palm Beach, Florida, party set after she started selling them from a juice stand in 1959.
