Standards of beauty —
South Korea is increasingly setting the standard for the growing market in skincare products in Asia, and especially China.

Good look —
"The success of South Korean brands has a lot to do with Chinese consumers copying the style of South Korean soap opera and music stars," says Vivienne Rudd, director of global innovation at market researcher Mintel.

Star power —

Big market —
Despite the coverage that South Korean brands have received recently, it is still brands from Europe and the U.S. that rule the roost in China, experts say.

Beauty guru —
American entrepreneur Michelle Phan is a make-up expert who started out as a humble vlogger on YouTube and now has more than 7 million subscribers: "I started a personal blog with photos and my readers wanted to learn how I did my makeup. I posted a few pictures, but then realized that the beauty of makeup is best seen in motion. My school laptop had a built-in webcam, so I planned my first tutorial and downloaded a free editing tool. I'm not going to lie, my first video was AWKWARD -- editing myself was so embarrassing! But I got over it and posted it to YouTube and didn't look back. To my shock, the next day it had over 10,000 views and surpassed 40,000 by the end of the week! The comments kept pouring in, and that's how it all began."

YouTube celebrity —
Make-up supremo Michelle Phan: "For a long time I have passionately pursued my dreams, although I was never quite sure where it would take me. When I decided to go to art school to follow my dream of becoming an artist, I had no idea I would end up on YouTube or that my videos would end up being seen my millions of people. I was not a professionally trained make-up artist. I am self-taught in every way -- from make-up artistry to shooting and editing my videos. I never expected this to happen, but it's been an incredible adventure and I've learned a lot along the way."
