2014's summer of supermoons kicked off on July 12. Mike Chiodo, who also goes by the photography name Mikiodo, was one of many who stayed up late to photograph July's supermoon. "Living in New York City, I am always craving some nature; I don't get enough. So I often look to the evening and nighttime skies to get my fix," he said.

Bob Yee seeks out the "sweet spot of dusk," which he describes as when "it's half light and half dark, so that you know it's night but there's color in the sky and you can still see details." Bradley Owens woke up at 3 a.m. to execute this colorful photo of the supermoon in Tucson, Arizona, on Sunday. "The timing was perfect with the sun rising behind me with a few mountains to shield the direct sunlight," he said. "This helped the sky be as blue as it was with the perfect orange glow to the moon itself. It was much more beautiful in person and very majestic!"

Eric Strauss of Clifton, Virginia, shot this photo through the viewfinder of his neighbor's telescope. "This is the first time I had ever tried that, and it worked out better than I would have ever imagined," he said. "The hardest part was to focus and frame the moon in the viewfinder correctly. The shadow on the top of the picture is not the moon's shadow, but instead from the way I framed the image within the viewfinder."

Maz Zabaneh usually captures underwater and landscape photos, but couldn't resist the supermoon when he visited the Cayman Islands on Saturday. "When I was taking this picture, I was focused on making sure that captured the light as I saw it. The funny thing is in Grand Cayman, you have chickens running around in the wild, so as I was taking this picture I can hear a rooster nearby crowing."

Malkiel Barroso said the supermoon caught his attention as it lit up this building in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Saturday. "It was very radiant; it made all the unclouded space look blue and brought out the darkness in the clouds."

Dijana Serhatlic lives close to Modrac Lake in Bikodze, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and went driving over there to get the best photo Saturday. "I love the sky, it's amazing and I always try to get the best photo I can, to show my friends the moon the way I see it," she said. "But other than the moon, I do not take photos of other bodies in the sky."
