By the fall of 2009, at the start of his junior year of college, John Janetzko weighs about 290 pounds -- the heaviest he has ever been.

Janetzko started exercising more during the spring of his junior year, and he watched what he ate more closely. But his senior year was rough; he couldn't find time to go to the gym as he had before, and he gained back some of the weight he had lost previously.

Janetzko entered graduate school at Harvard University in the fall of 2011, and he got even more serious about weight loss. He met his goal of getting under 200 pounds by around January 2012, and from there he kept on slimming toward 180 and then 170. Here he is in June 2012, having lost all the weight he wanted, but still not feeling great about himself.

There was no one moment where it clicked that Janetzko liked the way he looked. He estimates that his self-image improved around May 2013, when this photo was taken.

Now at 165 pounds, Janetzko is still physically active, but he doesn't push himself so much in terms of exertion and calorie restriction. He is a doctoral candidate at Harvard University.
